AA Meeting Report free essay sample
The meeting that I attended was called ââ¬Å"The Way of Life Groupâ⬠. It took place at Palos Methodist Church, 12101 S Harlem Ave on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 7:00 PM. There were about twenty to thirty people at the meeting. They were all very friendly and welcoming to me as an observer. There were new members and older members and everyone was very open about their situation and dependence on alcohol. Overall, the participants were of all ages, ethnicities, and there was an even amount of men and women. The biggest thing that I noticed about the participants that were at the meeting was that they did not look like my perception of someone who was suffering from alcohol dependence. They were like average people that I would meet during everyday life or someone that I could even see as a friend. It never occurred to me that these individuals would be normal everyday people. I assumed that they would be dysfunctional and unable to participate in the meeting, but many of them looked healthy and were happy to participate and talk at the meeting. Testimonial There was an individual who gave a testimonial. This individuals name was Maurine and her sobriety date was September 28, 2005, at the age of 50. She has completed her recovery, but continues to return to help others with her story and because she believes it helps her to be a stronger person. She grew up on the South side. He invited her to another meeting and stated that he would be there. She did not believe in the A. A. process, but she still went to the meeting and she was surprised at the fact that there was someone willing to support her. She stated that they told her to take her recovery one day at a time, but she was happy if she could just make it fifteen minutes at a time. Maurine said that now she is embarrassed by her past and that it was hard and scary for her to get through the process. Nevertheless, she listened to the people at the meetings and felt that she could connect to the people who would speak at the meetings. She got divorced because of the fact that the person she was with would not stop drinking and she believed that it would be problematic to her recovery. The biggest thing that she believed helped her through her recovery was the fact that people in A. A. would actually did the things that they said they would and that she enjoy the time with the people she meet at A. A. The people she spent time with now did not require the type of excitement that she needed when she was drinking, but at the same time they could have fun together. Issues Addressed The issues that were addressed during this meeting all revolved around the twelve steps and traditions. The individuals at the meeting worked hard to promote these steps and traditions so that all the newcomers were aware of them and understand them. However, I think that the biggest issues that were addressed at this meeting were encouraging the newcomers that there is something greater than them that will help them with their alcoholism and the fact that the group always be there for those willing to make a change for the better with their dependence on alcohol. I think that both of these issues are extremely important. I believe without a strong spirituality an individual will have a hard time in life and will turn to other outlets like alcohol to find a way to cope. Also I believe that having a support group to help you through your hard times will give an individual a better chance at success and being able to overcome their dependence on whatever drug they may use, like alcohol. Both of these issues seemed like important things and I was glad to see that they were addressed during the A. A. meeting that I attended. Role of a Sponsor The sponsor helps the individual through their journey in A. A. They are supposed to guide them through AA with the twelve steps and help them to become more connected to the program. They help encourage the patient to attend meetings and help them have a positive attitude throughout the process. They should not make the individuals dependent on them. Instead, they should help the individual to understand for themselves how to use the twelve step program to be successful in their journey and then be able to help others do the same. They help to promote a better life for the person they have sponsored so that they will not have any need or desire to drink again. The sponsor should be there to answer question for the individual, but at the same time the sponsor does not have all the answers. The sponsor acts as a friend and a mentor for the newcomer in A. A. The dormant spores of Anthrax can live in soil and animal products, such as hides (leather) for years and it is not easy to kill by heat or cold. Diagnosis typically requires the element of suspicion for a physician to diagnose anthrax. Diagnosis begins with culturing the bacterium and performing a gram stain. A motility test and the lack of hemolysis on blood agar can also be used to diagnose anthrax. The main virulence factors are itââ¬â¢s polypeptide capsule and what is referred to as a tripartite toxin which is composed of three separate proteins. One protein is called edema factor the second protein is protective antigen, and the third is lethal factor which causes massive inflammation and shock. There is a vaccine that contains live spores and a toxoid prepared from a special strain of B anthracis used to protect livestock in areas of high anthrax cases. There is also a purified toxoid that is recommended for humans that have frequent contact with livestock or animal products that could potentially carry the bacteria. The preferred treatment for anthrax is antibiotics such as penicillin, doxycycline, or ciproflaxin. Anthrax has become one of the popular choices for use as a biological warfare agent. Reasons for this would be because the spores of Bacillus anthracis can remain dangerous for many decades. Other than the use of anthrax in bioterrorism, the occurrence of anthrax is rare and occurs most frequently in developing countries with high agriculture concentration and without veterinary public health programs. Introduction As the demand of health-care interpreting is growing, health institutions need more professional medical interpreters. As an interpreter, however, many untrained bilingual people interpret between the patients and the medical practitioners in medical setting in Korea. When the interpreters who are related to the patient interpret for the patient and the medical practitioners, impartiality sometimes is challenged because it is difficult to adhere to neutrality when their relatives or friends are involved. This paper is aiming to figure out the principle of impartiality which seems to be most challenged and consequences of using relatives and friends as the interpreter drawn from my own interpreting experience in medical settings. Description When I was in Korea, I used to be a volunteer interpreter in international clinic. As a volunteer interpreter, my job was not demanded professional medical interpreting skills. One day, I got a call from a nurse who had a foreign patient. She told me that the patient was an English man and he needed an interpreter when he sees a doctor. The nurse also said that this consultation did not contain serious or difficult medical terminology. When I went to the waiting room, I recognized that he is my former English professor. He also remembered me so we exchanged greetings. While we were exchanging greetings, the nurse asked about our relationship and I told her that I took his class in last semester. When the nurse heard my story, she said that it might be good if the patient has a company who know him. At that time, I thought that our relationship, professor and student, would not be a problem to be an interpreter for him. Therefore, I showed him into the doctorââ¬â¢s room and started ... ... the patient. As a matter of situation and literature, I believe that the interpreters should not take an assignment which is related to the interpreter in medical setting. However, if the relationship with the patient is leading to successful consequences, the interpreters should take an assignment as the patientââ¬â¢s needed. Conclusion The top priority of the medical interpreters is removing language barrier between the medical practitioners and the patients and helping the patients to treat properly. Indeed, impartiality can be challenged in medical setting. However, some articles are pointed out that the interpreter who is related to the patient is not always harmful to the patients and the medical practitioners. Therefore, when the medical interpreters take an assignment, they should consider what the best is for the patients and the medical practitioners.

Week Two Discussion Questions â⬠¢ Read ââ¬Å"White Privilege and Male Privilegeâ⬠by Peggy McIntosh, and ââ¬Å"The Negative Consequences of Male Privilegeâ⬠by Stephen Farough, in Understanding and Managing Diversity. What are your reactions to the articles? Do you prefer one article to the other? Do you find the information in both articles accurate? Is one more relevant than the other is? Why or why not? â⬠¢ Under what circumstances is ethnicity apparent? How can an ethnic identity be both positive and perhaps counterproductive? Give a detailed example. â⬠¢ What is an issue indigenous people face regarding assimilation? Describe this issue and any effort made to mitigate it. How effective were these efforts? If they were not effective, what could have been done differently? For ideas, consider researching the White House Tribal Nations Conference of 2009 or the Universal Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples issued by the United Nations in 2007. â⬠¢ Even within oneââ¬â¢s own community, every individual is different. Week Four Discussion Questions â⬠¢ In 2009, The EEOC implemented the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA). What effects might GINA potentially have on workplace culture, on health insurance, and on the economy? â⬠¢ Why is it important for managers to understand diversity management from both and managerial and legal perspectives? In your experience, how much legal knowledge have your managers possessed? â⬠¢ How did the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act change workplace culture? Give at least one example. â⬠¢ Describe one group protected by the EEOC, and summarize the related legislation. Are all groups fairly represented? Are any groups missing? Justify your answer. â⬠¢ Why do some criticize affirmative action?
